THE STORY OF THE EAGLES
In 1971, Don Henley and Glenn Frey were playing in Linda Ronstadt’s backing band when they recruited Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner and formed The Eagles. The band quickly gained a following, and songs such as “Take it Easy,” “Desperado” and “Tequila Sunrise” hit the charts.
By the time 1975’s “Best of My Love” gave the group its first U.S. chart-topping single, Don Felder had joined The Eagles. That same year, the album “One of These Nights” propelled them to international superstardom. It was the first in a string of four No. 1 albums – and the last to feature Leadon, who was unhappy with the band’s shift from country-rock to a harder sound. His replacement was wild man rocker Joe Walsh.
The 1976 “Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)” album went on to sell more than 45 million copies worldwide. That same year, they released “Hotel California,” which brought even greater success – but the constant touring took a toll on the health of Meisner, who left in 1977 and was replaced by Poco’s Timothy B. Schmit. Meisner passed away in 2023.
By 1980, the band had run its course, and The Eagles went their separate ways. It would be 14 years before the band reunited, their hugely succesful reunion tour spawning the chart-topping live album “Hell Freezes Over.” In that time, Henley and Frey enjoyed very successful solo careers.
The band went on a lengthy hiatus again in 2001 when the firing of Don Felder saw the group mired in legal wrangles. They reconvened as a quartet in 2007, the album “Long Road Out of Eden” debuting at the top of the charts worldwide..
The 2016 death of Glenn Frey seemed to have drawn the final curtain on The Eagles – but the band resurfaced with Frey’s son Deacon and Henley’s son, Will, joining country star Vince Gill in the lineup. Covid intervened and took the band out of circulation, but they embarked on a farewell tour in the fall of 2023. The following winter, The Eagles took up a residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas.
